Who Undertakes The Design

Given the importance of the design, we pay special attention to the people that undertake the design process – especially for the large projects within the commercial, construction and rail & highways sectors. We have a team that can provide assistance on the smaller projects, and regularly work alongside professionals such as:

Landscape Architects

Focus on the aesthetic integration of the wall into the landscape.

Ensure the wall complements the surrounding environment and meets the client’s design vision.

Structural or Civil Engineers

Specialise in the structural integrity and stability of the wall.

Design walls to withstand soil pressure, water load, and other forces, ensuring compliance with local building Regulations.

Geotechnical Engineers

Analyse soil conditions to determine necessary wall specifications (e.g. foundation depth, backfill material, reinforcement).

Provide insights into drainage needs and retaining wall height capacity.

Specialist Contractors

Experienced retaining wall contractors may design simpler walls, especially if they are well-versed in the products suitable for smaller or domestic projects, such as the Rosetta® Grand Ledge system.

Product Manufacturers

Some manufacturers like Rosetta® offer design support, providing tools, guidelines, and software to contractors or engineers working on Grand Ledge walls.

The Importance of Proper Retaining Wall Design and Professional Installation

A correctly designed retaining wall is critical to ensuring the stability, safety, and long-term performance of any project. Retaining walls must be engineered to handle the significant forces exerted by soil, water, and environmental conditions. Without proper design, issues such as structural failure, soil erosion, or water build-up can lead to costly repairs, safety hazards, and potential damage to surrounding property and infrastructure.

By choosing a professional contractor like E-Build Site Services, you gain the following benefits:

Expertise in Design

Expertise

Professional contractors understand the complexities of soil conditions, load-bearing requirements, and drainage systems. This ensures your retaining wall is structurally sound, compliant with regulations, and tailored to your project’s unique needs.

High Quality Materials

High Quality

Professional contractors that use durable, proven materials made in the UK, that ensure long-lasting performance and resistance to environmental factors.

Precision Installation

Precision

Proper construction techniques are crucial for ensuring your retaining wall stands the test of time. From base preparation to accurate block placement, every step is executed to perfection.

Integrated Drainage

Drainage

A well-designed drainage system prevents hydrostatic pressure build-up, a common cause of retaining wall failures, ensuring the wall remains stable and functional.

Cost-Effective Option

Cost-Effective

While DIY or poorly executed retaining walls may seem cheaper upfront, professional installation minimises the risk, ongoing maintenance and repair costs, and provides a more reliable and economical solution.

Peace of Mind

Peace

Working with professionals means your retaining wall is built to the highest standards, giving you confidence in the safety and durability of your investment.

Retaining Wall Integrated Drainage

Base Preparation

Proper base preparation is one of the most critical elements of retaining wall construction. The retaining wall is only as stable as the foundation it is placed on. If sub-grade soils are deemed unstable or excessively soft, we will need to involve a qualified geotechnical engineer for remediation. The solution may entail over-excavating and replacing the soft soil with compacted granular material.

We would first excavate for the levelling pad. The minimum levelling pad thickness for most walls is 150mm (6 inches). Higher walls may require a thicker levelling pad based on the detailed wall design. The levelling pad should be a minimum of 900mm (36 inches) wide, or wider if called for in the engineered construction drawings. The sub-grade material should be compacted to 95% of its standard proctor maximum dry density.

Integrated Drainage

We typically install a 100mm (4-inch) diameter perforated drain at the back of the excavated trench. We make sure the drain has a long-term gravity outlet (either to daylight or to an approved catch basin), and place clean crushed stone into the excavated trench before levelling and compacting stone to the design thickness. We always check levels with a laser or transit to ensure quality standards are met for maximum longevity.

Block sizes and placement shown are for reference only. Individual blocks will vary with installation pattern. This drawing is for reference only. Final designs for construction must be prepared by a registered Professional Engineer using the actual conditions of the proposed site. Final wall design must address both internal and external drainage, global stability, scour/erosion, and shall be evaluated by the Professional Engineer who is responsible for the wall design.

Whether stabilising a hillside, preventing erosion, or creating functional spaces, a professionally designed and installed retaining wall is an investment in safety, reliability, and long-term performance. Choose E-Build Site Services for retaining wall solutions you can trust.
